Not only am I a visual story teller, but also an award winning freelance photojournalistic photographer. Wow, that is a mouthful! I have been a freelance press photographer for the Isanti-Chisago Star in Cambridge, Minnesota for over a decade. I have an awesome newspaper editor who knows the strength of my work. For the past few years he has secretly submitted some of my event photography to the Minnesota Newspaper Association's yearly contest. These submissions have given me a second and a first place award for my work capturing the annual Isanti Firefighters Rodeo. Funny, but I never thought of myself as a sports photographer until recently. All in all, I am very thankful for his support and for believing in me.
I love event photography and photojournalism because there is always something happening and something for my camera to shoot. One of my favorite events to capture is rodeo. I can't wait for that gate to open so that I can capture all "the bulls and the blood, the dust and the mud" like Garth Brooks so perfectly stated. I love being able to capture adrenaline and the human emotion that it brings forward. The more action the better, but sometimes it's not the cowboys and cowgirls that give me the shot. It's all faces in a crowd. It can be what is behind or past the action that can be the most fascinating. I strive to capture the height of the event moments whether that is with the person in the spotlight or that faces in the crowd.
Beyond rodeo, I have captured music festivals, protests, ski races, and even a few celebrities. As an event photographer I am always on the move. When I am done, I know that I have captured images that will get people talking. I am also beat! The energy in event photography, always being on task is wearing, but I would not trade the action for anything in my body of work.
